Areas of Specialisation
Alex has been a member of Chambers since the successful completion of his pupillage. Before coming to the Bar he worked for Lovells, a large international law firm.
Alex undertakes work in all areas of criminal law, both defence and prosecution, and has developed a substantial Crown Court practice. His cases have included a wide range of offences, in particular matters relating to drugs, serious violence, fraud and sexual offences. In addition Alex has acted as Junior Counsel in a number of multi-handed cases involving serious immigration offences and money laundering. Alex is also experienced in the area of confiscation proceedings.
In addition to general crime Alex also undertakes regulatory work. He has been instructed to prosecute on behalf of Local Authorities in respect of a number of areas including enforcement proceedings and breaches of Health and Safety legislation in both the Magistrates’ and the Crown Court.
Aside from Criminal Law Alex also has experience in relation to civil actions against the police and prison adjudications.
Alex has lectured on the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 as part of the Chambers ‘Criminal Law Specialist Seminars’.
Significant cases in which Alex has been instructed alone or as junior counsel include:
R v Williams [2009] (Inner London Crown Court) Counsel for defendant charged with statutory rape.
R v Erdogan [2008] (Central Criminal Court) Counsel for defendant charged with attempted murder.
R v Campbell [2008] (Blackfriars Crown Court) Counsel for defendant charged with Grevious Bodily Harm with intent; the injuries included stab wounds to the complainant's mouth.
R v Daoudi [2007] (St Albans Crown Court) Counsel for defendant charged with arson with intent to endanger life.
R v Alam & Others [2007] (Croydon Crown Court) Junior Counsel in multi-handed money laundering allegation.
R v Romain & Romain [2007] (Court of Appeal) Successful appeal against sentence in respect of a firearms offence to which the mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years applied. Sentence reduced to 3 months imprisonment.
R v Orr & Others [2006] (Southwark Crown Court) Counsel for a defendant charged in a ten-handed conspiracy to rob trial involving allegations of train ‘steaming’. Although acquitted of the conspiracy the defendant was convicted of a substantive allegation of attempted robbery. The sentences imposed were subsequently subject to an Attorney-General’s Reference.
R v Woghiren & Others [2005] (Croydon Crown Court) Junior Counsel in a large scale four handed conspiracy to defraud the Secretary of State for the Home Office.
R v Gill & Others [2005] (Isleworth Crown Court) Junior Counsel for the first defendant in a well publicised six handed conspiracy to evade immigration laws through the arranging of ‘sham marriages’ in the UK and India.
