Simon Baker and Alex Goudie represented Anthony Quarco, dubbed by the press as "the most dishonest man in Britain". The defendant was convicted, after over three days of jury deliberation and a majority direction, on 14 counts relating to misconduct in public office, facilitation of illegal immigration, money laundering and the possession of false identity documents with intent.
Mr Quarco was an Immmigration Officer who had been operating a wide-ranging immigration fraud through the Gift of God Zion Train Church (of which he was co-founder and senior pastor). Over a number of years he used his position as an immigration officer to stamp false passports and he fraudulently sponsored numerous immigrants entry clearance applications into the UK on the pretense of them being religious workers within the Church whereas they were in fact working using false identities and bank accounts provided by the defendant. Searches of the Church office revealed dozens of false passports and files relating to numerous false identites used by Mr Quarco to allow immigrants to work illegally in the UK. Although tried alone, a number of the people that he had facilitated into the country had previously pleaded guilty and one gave evidence against Mr Quarco at trial.
Mr Quarco, who was sentenced to 9 years' imprisonment, was acquitted in relation to number of further charges relating to other passports found in the Church Office and were unable to reach a verdict in relation to an allegation of theft of Home Office leave to remain vignettes from Mr Quarco's work.
