The Court of Appeal has reserved judgement in the sentence appeal of Greaves and others and it is hoped that they will shortly provide a guideline judgement on the appropriate sentencing principles to be used in “makeweight” Money Laundering Counts, where the criminality is in reality no more than that of “handling one’s own stolen goods".
At the end of April 2010, the Court of Appeal delivered a guideline judgement on sentences in money laundering cases. In a reserved judgement following the full hearing on the 25th March 2010, Claude Greaves, represented by Brian Lett QC, had his sentence slashed from five and a half years to three years.
